How to show up better in AI answers: free tips for KL cafes
More customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI where to eat. You can’t control what they say, but you can fix most of what they read. Here are 10 things you can do yourself, in order.
A quick word on expectations: nobody can guarantee an AI will recommend you, and answers change a lot. In a large US study, four AI tools picked the same top local business only 4% of the time (Yext, 2026, US data). What you can do is make sure the facts they find about you are right, everywhere.
- Get your Google Business Profile right first
Why: Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google’s own listings, reviews and Maps, so this is the page they read first.
How: Check hours (including public holidays), open status, category (“Cafe” or “Coffee shop”), the map pin, recent photos, your menu as text, and a plain description of what you’re known for.
- Fix old listings that AI tools may read
Why: AI tools search the web and summarise what they find, so an old page with wrong hours can end up in an answer.
How: Search “[your cafe] opening hours”, then claim or correct Burpple, Tripadvisor, Facebook, Foursquare and mall directories. Email old blogs that still say “temporarily closed”.
- Claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect
Why: ChatGPT’s web search uses Microsoft as a search partner, and Bing Places feeds Microsoft’s results.
How: Both are free. Apple Maps is the default map on iPhones. Copy your Google details across exactly.
- Write your name, address and phone the same way everywhere
Why: Matching details across sites make it easier for any tool to trust them.
How: Pick one version (e.g. “Lot G-12, Jalan Example”) and use it on Google, Instagram, Facebook, your website and every listing.
- Invite every guest to leave an honest review
Why: Review numbers and recency rank among AI visibility factors in expert surveys, and Google says its review summaries use the past year of reviews.
How: One plain invitation for everyone, on a table card, receipt QR code or WhatsApp: “Good or bad, we read every one.” Don’t ask only happy customers, don’t ask people to mention a dish, and don’t offer anything in return. Those break Google’s review policy and can get reviews removed.
- Reply to the complaints that keep coming up, and fix the cause
Why: AI tools repeat lines that show up in many reviews, like “small cups for the price”.
How: Reply politely to the reviews behind a repeated complaint. If it’s fair, change the thing. Newer reviews then slowly change what gets summarised.
- Get onto the “best of” guides AI tools cite
Why: Curated lists and blog mentions are among the strongest signals in expert surveys of AI visibility.
How: Find which coffee guides, food blogs and mall directories show up when you ask an AI about your area. Pitch them a real story, like a new roast, menu or award. Never pay for fake mentions.
- Say clearly what you’re known for, in the same words everywhere
Why: Tools like Claude and Perplexity largely repeat what pages say about you.
How: Put your area, hours, signature items and anything useful (parking, wifi, halal status, laptop-friendly) in your Instagram bio, Facebook About, Linktree and website.
- Keep one official link for menu, hours and orders
Why: Google is testing a section in AI answers that highlights a business’s official pages, and two half-finished menus confuse everyone.
How: Pick one menu link and one ordering link, put them in your Google Business Profile website field, and delete the old PDF.
- Post a short update on Google once a week
Why: Posts show on your profile in Google Search and Maps. It’s not proven to change AI answers, but it’s a 10-minute habit that keeps your facts fresh.
How: One checkable line is enough: “New: pandan latte, from 1 Nov” or “Open 8am on public holidays.”
Google says Gemini can now use a person’s saved places in its suggestions, if they allow it. Google hasn’t said how much saves count, so treat this as a free experiment, not a fix.
Don’t bother with tricks: Google says you don’t need special AI files or special markup for its AI features (Google Search Central), and fake reviews or planted posts can get you penalised.
